Focus and Scope
The Philippine Journal of Labor and Industrial Relations (PJLIR) is an annual academic journal published by the School of Labor and Industrial Relations of the University of the Philippines. It serves as a platform for the analysis of trends and developments and emerging theoretical debates in industrial and employment relations and human resource development in the Philippines, the ASEAN region, the rest of Asia, and beyond Asia.
As the PJLIR adopts a broad definition of work and industrial relations, articles using interdisciplinary approaches are particularly encouraged. Also, cross-national comparative research and analysis is among the thrusts of the PJLIR. While articles that demonstrate theoretical or empirical originality – or both – are preferred, they should underscore the practical significance of the contribution to practitioners in the field of industrial relations and human resource development.
Before submitting your manuscript, authors should make a careful read and follow all the guidelines and instructions provided in the next sections. Manuscripts not conforming to these guidelines will be returned.
Publication Frequency
The PJLIR is published once a year both in print and online. The online publication is through the Saliksik: UPD Journals Online at https://saliksik.upd.edu.ph/. The yearly issue comes out in December.
Peer review process
Papers submitted for consideration in the PJLIR undergo an initial editorial screening, after which papers are sent to one or two reviewers. The journal observes a double-blind review process, that is, authors and reviewers are anonymous to each other. Authors submitting a manuscript should ensure that their identity is not revealed in the acknowledgements or references, among others.
Excessive self-referencing (including more than three of the author’s own publications and other works) reveals an author’s identity. Short biographical details of the author/s are to be added after a manuscript has been accepted. The editor will notify contributors of the decision within three months from receipt of manuscripts. The editing and lay-out of accepted articles are normally done four to five months before publication.
Peer reviewers selected by the Issue Editor are those that have expertise, extensive research, or a good record of publications on the topic of the manuscripts. Manuscripts that have passed the peer review process, including revising the manuscript in consideration of the comments and suggestions of the peer reviewer/s, are considered for publication in the PJLIR. Peer reviewers may also be asked by the Issue Editor to review again a revised version of the manuscript that they reviewed.
Submission Guidelines
1. Articles in the PJLIR should be between 5,000 and 8,000 words in length, including endnotes and references. However, (exceptionally) longer articles
based on a particularly substantial research may be considered. Articles should not have been published or be under consideration for publication
elsewhere. A note confirming this should be attached to each submission. For jointly authored papers, the corresponding author will confirm that all
authors have agreed to the submission on these terms.
2. Corresponding author’s full contact details (email and mailing address) should be provided. Academic affiliations are required for all co-authors. These
details should be presented separately to the main text of the article to facilitate anonymous peer review.
3. Keywords should not be more than five words. They should be carefully chosen. The abstract should be between 100 and 150 words and should
include the major findings and main arguments of the article.
4. The text should be double-spaced and with a margin of 1 inch on all sides. Text should be Times Roman 12 point. Use Arial 12 point for headings of
sections, figures and tables. Use only one space between sentences.
5. Please use end-notes instead of footnotes. End-notes should be in the same format as the main text. End-notes should be placed immediately before
the References.
6. Use double quotation marks for quotations, single for quotes within quotes. Quotations of 40 words or more should be indented, without quote marks,
with an extra space before and after.
7. Please minimize the use of tables and figures. If used, figures and tables should be in editable format. They should not be in picture format in the
submitted article. The PJLIR observes a standard format in typesetting figures, tables and graphs in all published works. All figures and tables should
be properly titled and numbered accordingly, with separate numbering for tables and figures. Titles of tables and figures should be placed at the top of
each table and figure. Please provide the complete (data) source of the tables and figures at the bottom of the table or figure.
8. Any acknowledgements should appear first under a separate heading (Acknowledgments) at the end of the article before the list of references. Also,
authors are requested to acknowledge the funding they received, if any, for the research or activity on which the article is based. A separate heading for
funding (Funding Acknowledgment) should appear right after the Acknowledgments.
9. The PJLIR follows the reference style APA 7th edition. In-text bibliographic references should use the author-date system (e.g. Hyman, 2014, p. 8).
Where several citations are given in the text, list them alphabetically by author. If there are several publications by the same author, start with the
earliest publication. Check that all citations in the text are listed in the References, and vice versa. Journal articles and book chapters referred in the
paper should bear page numbers of the whole article or chapter in the References section.
10. The author of the manuscript is responsible for obtaining permission for any copyright material used.
